Technology keeps you connected everywhere you go, helps you capture every moment & makes your life a bit easier; stay up-to-date with tips & tricks from eHow. Advice for speeding up your PC abounds, but not all methods are equal. Here are ten quick tips for making your Windows computer a little faster. Patrol may make things that much easier for you. Restrict the number of start- ups. Why have programs starting up when you don’t really use them. Even those you need can always be started manually by clicking on the programs icon. I personally prefer not to have ANY startups – except my antivirus software running. So decide for yourself which one’s you really need to start- up every time your Windows boots. You may use msconfig in Windows 7 or Task Manager to manage startup programs. You can also delay Startup Programs or control the order in which they load when Windows boots. Remove pre- installed Crapware. Remove any crapware which may have come pre- installed on your new Windows PC, as many a time it’s this crapware that causes a machine to crawl! Reduce Visual Effects Open Control Panel and search for Visual Effects. Under Performance Options, you can Adjust for best performance or select or unselect the options manually. This will tweak visual effects and remove a lot of eye- candy. You may, however, want to check the Smooth edges of screen fonts, and therefore go in for a Custom selection. Disabling all can actually negate the purpose of . Of course, nowadays, you don’t really need to do it manually as the built- in Windows 8/1. But if you wish you may use a third- party free defragmentation software too. Check Hard Disk for errors. From time to time, it is a good practice to check your hard disk drive for errors using a tool built into Windows called CHKDSK (for Check Disk). In Windows 8/1. 0, Microsoft has redesigned chkdsk utility. The disk is periodically checked for file system errors, bad sectors, lost clusters, etc, during Automatic Maintenance and you now no longer need to really go and run it. Delete Junk Files, Clean Registry & optimize Windows. While deleting junk and temporary files may not exactly make your Windows faster, it is more a matter of good housekeeping. You may use the built- in Disk Cleanup Utility or a freeware like CCleaner or Quick Clean to do the same. Whether one should use a free Registry Cleaner to clean up the Windows Registry occasionally is a matter of debate, so you may take a call on it. However I do use it once a month to remove left- over registry keys. Compacting the Registry occasionally is a good idea too. If you are looking for shareware optimizer, you may want to consider Tune Up Utilities, Boost. Speed or Power. Suite Pro. These beginners tips to optimize Windows for better performance will also interest you. Fix It for slow Windows computers. Microsoft has released a Fix It for slow Windows computers. It will automatically diagnose and fix causes of poor system performance, such as the power saver setting, multiple anti- virus programs running, multiple startup programs running, and too many users logged on to the computer. Use High- Performance Power Plan. The default Power Setting in the “Power Saver” plan limits the CPU to 5. Windows OS. Open the Power Options Control Panel and change it to “High Performance” to give your CPU full throttle. Change System startup options. You may change the time to display list of operating systems via System Properties and shave off maybe even 1. If you follow the tips mentioned above, it should suffice. If as a tweak- enthusiast, you are looking for more tips and tweaks, read on. Processor Scheduling. Depending on the usage of your Windows computer, you can configure processor scheduling, so that it gives you the best performance while using Programs or for Background Processes. Performance Information and Tools. Identify programs, features, drivers slowing down a fast start up, shutdown or hibernation using built- in Performance Information and Tools. Windows Boot Performance Diagnostics. You can also use the inbuilt Windows Boot Performance Diagnostics to detect Windows Boot Performance problems and attempt to determine their root causes. Disable or delay loading of Windows Services. Windows has over 1. Disable the services you are sure you do not require. For example, if your PC is a stand- alone one, there may be several services which you can disable or switch over to manual mode. Auto- starting and closing down of services take time & resources. These can be saved. Black. Viper’s Service Configurations is an excellent guide to follow. Based on Black. Vipers recommendations, we have created SMART, a utility to tweak Windows Services in Windows 1. Vista, XP Services. Personal preferences will dictate which you should consider disabling. But there are a few Automatic services you could consider setting to Manual: If you don’t use a printer, disable the “Print Spooler” service. If you’re not running a Tablet PC, disable the “Tablet PC Input” service. If you don’t connect cameras, webcams, or scanners to your PC, then disable the “Windows Image Acquisition” Service. I wouldn’t disable the “Ready. Boost” service even if you don’t use it as “Ready. Boot” is integrated into this service so setting this service to manual or disable with slow down your boot time. You can also delay loading of specific Services. Disable Search Indexer. If you do not use Search regularly, you may want to consider disabling Search Indexing. To do so, open Control Panel\System and Maintenance\Performance Information and Tools. On the LHS you will see options to Adjust Indexing Options, Visual Effects, Power Settings, etc. Untick files to index under “Indexing Options” in the Control Panel. However the complete way to disable indexing would also involve going into your hard disk’s properties and unticking the option “Index this drive for faster searching”. Then you must go into Services. Windows Search” Service. Do note that the Search Indexer only runs when the computer is idle, so you need not turn off this very powerful feature in Windows 1. Disable Transient Multimon Manager (TMM)The Transient Multimon Manager (TMM) is a Microsoft Windows operating system feature targeted at improving the user experience of connecting and disconnecting displays, particularly for the mobile user. When you start Windows Vista (or later), you see a 2- 3 sec delay followed by a blank black screen. This is the time Windows searches for external monitors. So if you don’t use an external monitor, you could always safely turn this off! To disable TMM, click Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Task Scheduler. On LHS, expand “Task Scheduler Library” then expand “Microsoft”, then expand “Windows” and finally click “Mobile. PC”. You will see a task called “TMM”. Rt- Click on it, and select “Disable”. Boot Defragmentation. Ensure that boot defragmentation is enabled so that files used during start- up are clubbed together. To check this, start Regedit and navigate to the following key: HKEY. Right- click on it and select Modify. Change the value to Y to enable and N to disable. Reboot. Disable Clear page file on shutdown. If you have set your Page file to be cleared on every shutdown for security reasons, it will take some time. Cleaning the page- file on every shutdown means overwriting the data by zeros, and it takes time. To change this setting, open Registry Editor and navigate to the following registry key: HKEY! Restart your PC at least once a week, especially if you use it a lot. Restarting a PC is a good way to clear out its memory and ensuring that any errant processes and services that started running get shut down. Generally, people also recommend emptying the Prefetch directory once in a while. But Windows uses this directory to speed up launching applications. It analyzes the files you use during startup and the applications you launch, and it creates an index to where those files and applications are located on your hard disk. Using this index, Windows can launch files and applications faster. Utilities like CCleaner too have the option to clear the prefetcher. Should you choose to use this option of . The Prefetcher is best left alone! In any case, Windows cleans it at 1. During boot time, enter the BIOS settings, by pressing Del key during boot- up, and disable . This saves time for those who do not use floppy drives. There are also some BIOS hacks like Enabling Quick Post, Disabling Boot Delay, etc, but best to refrain from these. Change Boot- Order Sequence. Normally, the BIOS is set to boot from floppy first, then CD and then Hard Disk. Changing the Boot- Order to be: Hard Disk first, then maybe CD/Floppy, could possibly “shave” a second. Disable Windows startup/shutdown/logon/logoff sounds. Open Control Panel > Sounds & Audio devices > Sound tab. In Program Events select . Right- Click on your Windows 8 Desktop > Personalize > Screen. Saver > None > OK. Fonts take time to load. Removing some can save on resources. But one must be careful in deciding which fonts to remove. If you delete some system fonts, you may be in for trouble. To really reduce your shutdown time, open Regedit and navigate to the following key: HKEY. Select “Wait. To. Kill. Service. Timeout” Right- click on it and select Modify. Easy Ways to Make Your Mac or PC Run Faster. Nobody likes using a sluggish computer. Instead of banging your head against your monitor, here are 1. Mac or PC. 1. RESTART YOUR COMPUTER. Before you roll your eyes, consider there's a reason why this is the first thing your colleagues in the I. T. Certain applications experience “memory leaking”, the effects of which, after a while, add up to consume valuable resources (and thus, diminish performance). Rebooting gives your machine a fresh start and clears up any memory leakage- issues. CLEAN UP YOUR HARD DRIVE. Fresh off a reboot but still having problems? One of the best ways to make your Mac or PC run faster is to delete old files. While this process is easier said than done, there are a number of tools you can employ—that don't involve you manually clicking through thousands of files. Magican for Mac or CCleaner for PC are both programs that can help expedite what would otherwise be a pretty painful process. One area you may not have considered tidying: your system’s language settings. Most computers come pre- installed with various alternative languages that you probably don't use, and yes, these too take up valuable hard drive space. Programs like Monolingual will go through and delete unnecessary language settings for you. Daily hard drive maintenance and clean up will go a long way towards improving your computer’s speed and functionality. UPDATE YOUR SOFTWARE. Those reminder pop- ups can be annoying, but they serve an important purpose: updating your software and operating system will help everything work better. If you have a Mac, make sure you have the latest version of Mac OS X (Version 1. El Capitan”) from the Mac App Store. If you're on a PC, download the latest version of Windows (Windows 1. The new versions of each operating system were designed to make older computers run more efficiently, so take advantage of the upgrade. MANAGE START UP . In all likelihood, there are at least a few unnecessary programs that you had no idea were running. Under the “Login Items” tab, you can check only the applications that you absolutely need when you start up. If you're on a PC, from the “Start” menu, type in “msconfig” in the search bar. Click the “Startup” tab and you'll see the list of all the programs that boot up every time you start your system. Use this list to select only the items you absolutely need. Too much multitasking can hinder your system’s performance, and lead to you not accomplishing any tasks at all. Curious as to which programs are causing the most problems? If you're on a Mac, open your . If those apps aren't necessary for whatever it is you're currently working on, close 'em. If you're on a PC, go to the “Start” menu and search for your “Task Manager.” This is where you'll find a list of all the programs open on your machine. The “Processes” tab will help you figure out which unnecessary programs are taking up the most RAM. Then kill accordingly! UNINSTALL BLOATWARE. Once you've figured out what programs you want at startup, think more broadly about the programs you actually use. Our computers come pre- loaded with items that end up sitting on our hard drives, taking up valuable space. Unfortunately, many people don’t bother trying to uninstall them because they think they need these apps to in order for their machines to run properly. There are tools out there that can help you decide what is necessary and what you can uninstall to make your machine work better, such as decrap. PC and App. Cleaner for Mac. If you're willing to take more drastic measures, try reinstalling Windows or Mac OS X. Important note: This process will wipe your data, but will give you a fresh start—without bloatware. Please, please, please back up all of your data, documents, pictures, and videos before you reinstall. CHECK FOR SPYWARE AND VIRUSES. Prevention is key, but the popup overload associated with third party software can be almost as annoying as the malware it's trying to prevent. Windows 8 and 1. 0 come pre- installed with antivirus software, and now this program, Microsoft Security Essentials is compatible for Windows 7 and Vista users. Mac OS X already has antivirus software installed, but you should still enable “Stealth Mode” in “System Preferences” to prevent spyware. Go to “Security & Privacy” and click “Firewall Options.” At the bottom of the window, you’ll find “Stealth Mode”—make sure the option is checked. It’s a good idea to scan for viruses and spyware once a week to keep your system running smoothly. Visit websites on the most up- to- date version of the browser you’re using, which nowadays can usually automatically detect if a website is malicious. Be smarter about clicking links in your email inbox. Never click a link or attachment in an email unless you can see the web address and avoid URL shortened links from unfamiliar senders. KEEP YOUR SYSTEM COOL. A computer will start to slow down if it’s overworked and overheated. To prevent this from happening, elevate your laptop on a stand or cooling pad to keep air circulating. Dust, dirt, and other gunk can clog air vents and lead to performance issues. Turn off your machine and use canned compressed air or a vacuum to remove anything obstructing your fans. It’s also a good idea to clean your keyboard, mouse, trackpad, and monitor with baby wipes and cotton swabs on a weekly basis. Just remember not to get your computer wet. MANAGE YOUR TABS. The more tabs you have open in a browser, the slower everything gets. Using a tab manager browser extension, like One. Tab and Tab. Man, can help you organize and consolidate your open tab—and greatly improve your productivity and speed. While you're at it, don't forget to clear your cache. UPGRADE YOUR RAM. If all else fails, take heart: you may not have to shell out hundreds (or thousands) of dollars for a new machine. First, try upgrading your computer's RAM (or Random Access Memory) to increase its speed. Depending on your usage patterns, it might be better to get more RAM, or it might be better to get faster RAM. So look around to see what’s best for you. Upgrading RAM is generally easier for PC users than Mac users. If you're on a PC, you may be able to do it yourself. But if you're on a Mac, use a site like Every. Mac. com and New Egg to figure out what kind of RAM you need and how much more you'll need for an upgrade. The folks at the Apple Genius Bar will be able to take it from there. What Happens If Windows Is Not Activated? Windows Product Activation stems software piracy. Photo. Objects. net/Photo. Objects. net/Getty Images. A young Bill Gates once complained about the copying of his company's Altair Basic software by computer hobbyists. This rampant theft, according to Gates, made all the hard work done by him and his company worth less than two dollars an hour. Decades later, Gates' company - - Microsoft - - instituted product activation and validity checking procedures that made the copying and sharing of its operating system and application software much more difficult for casual copiers and profiteering pirates. How Activation Works. Windows activation is part of Microsoft's . Activation differs from the installation process that requires a product code. It is also different from post- installation registration. Instead, the goal of Windows activation is to establish a link between a licensed copy Windows and a specific computer system. Creating such a link in theory should prevent the same copy of Windows from being installed on more than one machine, as was possible with earlier versions of the operating system. Following installation, Windows takes information from your video display adapter, SCSI and IDE drive adapters, processor type and serial number, hard drive serial number and your network adapter Media Access Control address to form a unique identity for your computer. No two computers should have the same hardware signature. When you try to install the same copy of Windows on more than one machine and then try to activate online or by phone, the activation will fail. If you want your Windows XP to be always genuine and not get into any legal problems with Microsoft, you have to disable Microsoft Windows critical updates. Windows XPWindows XP was the first Windows operating system to require activation. According to an official 2. Microsoft's support website, . After a grace period of 3. Vista enters . Under RFM, you can't play any Windows games. You will also lose access to premium features such as Aero Glass, Ready. Boost or and Bit. How to Check if Windows XP Is Activated. Activating Windows XP is essential to get the most out of its features, and you're forced to activate after thirty days. Locker. Finally, an unactivated Vista will automatically log you out of the system after only one hour of use until you successfully activate it. Windows 7. Unlike Windows XP and Vista, failure to activate Windows 7 leaves you with an annoying, but somewhat usable system. According to a Microsoft developer blog post on . If you don't activate then, you will see and . Until day 3. 0, you will get the . After day 3. 0, you will get the . In addition, Windows 7 does not perform any system updates after the grace period. Finally, Windows will automatically turn your screen background image to black every hour – even after you change it back to your preference. This behavior continues until you successfully activate Windows 7. About the Author. Allen Bethea has written articles on programming, web design, operating systems and computer hardware since 2. How to Extract Original (Default) System Files from Windows Setup Disc? Today we are going to address a very common Windows problem. Many times we modify or replace system files in Windows for customization purposes. For example, to customize or change login screen, boot screen, Start ORB, Windows theme, etc. Most common system files which are replaced by Windows users are Explorer. NTOSkrnl. exe, Logon. UI. exe, Shell. 32. MSgina. dll, authui. But sometimes we don't like the end result or we face problems after replacing or modifying those system files. In such case, we can perform a System Restore to restore our Windows to a previous working state or we can restore the backup of the system file which we created before replacing or modifying the original file. But what to do if we neither created a System restore point nor took a backup of the file? In such condition, we have no other option left except repairing or reinstalling Windows or we can copy the same file from another system and paste it in our system. Don't worry! Today we are going to share a small and easy to use trick which can help you in extracting any system file from Windows setup disc or ISO image file so that you can easily restore the original system file in Windows. Over the years more improved versions have since been developed and made available either via free download or as part of a service pack; depending on the operating system in question.
Today, Internet Explorer is amongst the most patronised web browsers, a web browser that at one point almost controlled the entire industry (around 2. However, because of the arrival of various other web browsers, such as Google Chrome, Safari and Firefox, Internet Explorers market share has dropped considerably. Today, as of 2. 01. Internet Explorer controls around 3. Despite all the improvements that Internet Explorer has gone through over the years, it’s still susceptible to instability. Internet Explorer freezes up quite regularly, more regularly than a lot of people would care to mention, and there are a number of reasons why this occurs. The Problems with IEThe latest of Microsoft’s IE instalments is the accumulated efforts of all its predecessors. However, reports of instability, freezing and random crashing are still fairly common. Problems range from people having difficulty loading the browsing up, to an incredibly slow and sluggish surfing experience. However, of all of these issues, the most annoying and frustrating of the lot is random freezing. Trust me; I know just how annoying it is for a browser to, at random intervals, become unresponsive. There are also reports of IE just shutting down, without prior warning, crashing the entire computer in the process. An issue made a thousand times worse if you’re actually doing something of importance on the computer when it crashes. Why Does IE Freeze? For those of you who have to contend with random freezing, you’ll more than likely want to know what causes it. Well, there are quite a few reasons why your internet browser may freeze, all of which may partially or wholly contribute to the problem. The first reason why your IE may be freezing randomly is because of the BHOs or Browser Help Objects that you have intentionally or unintentionally installed on your browser. BHOs are small add- on programs like Yahoo Toolbar, Google Toolbar, and Zone. Alarm Toolbar, which are designed to enhance your web surfing experience by increasing the browsers functionality. The issue arises when there’s a problem with the BHO that has been installed on your computer, which in turn translates into a problem on the browser itself. Another very common reason why IE will freeze up from time to time is because of the malicious plug- ins that has unintentionally been installed to the internet browser while browsing through certain sites. Errors, crashes, freezes, low performance on the. Desktop Operating Systems and Recovery; Desktop Boot and Lockup; Desktop Wireless and Networking; Desktop Audio; Desktop Video, Display and Touch. An intermittent browsing experience is only the tip of the iceberg as these types of plug- ins can be made to carry out certain malicious tasks, such as steal your personal information or steal your entire identity. Another reason why your browser may freeze consistently is because of registry errors. If you don’t know what the registry is, it’s basically a database component within your operating system, where all your configuration data is held. Data on Internet Explorer is held in the registry; as a result, the vast majority of browser issues can be attributed to errors within the registry. The last reason why your browser may be acting up is because of malware/viruses infecting your machine. These malicious files can be picked up while surfing the web, opening an email attachment or installing a program you downloaded off the internet. Viruses/Malware typically has negative implications for your system as a whole, and so it’s likely that the intermittent browser performance is only one facet of the issues on your system. With that said, there are several things you can do to combat this problem, these are as follows: Scan System For Malware/Viruses. Repair Windows Registry. Disable/Uninstall Unnecessary BHOs. Reinstall Internet Explorer. Clear Browser History. Reset IE Settings. Scan For Viruses/Malware. IE comes bundled with your Windows based system, resulting in a large number of people using it, many of which are oblivious to the other web browsers out there. Because of the popularity of this browser, it’s become a prime target by virus makers who develop viruses that are capable of hijacking ones computer. The side effect of these viruses is instability and constant crashing. Thus, the first thing you’ll want to do is install an antivirus program (assuming you don’t have one already) on your machine and run a full virus scan. If you don’t already have your own malware removal tool, I highly recommend you use Spy. The Windows Explorer or the File Explorer in the Windows operating system, helps us browse our files, folders and other data on our computer. You may face a problem. Windows Boot Genius. If your registry has become corrupted, that can manifest itself in a variety of ways, with browser freezing being one of such symptoms. The web browser cache location is where all the data on the websites you’ve visited in the past day or month (depending on how you have it configured) is stored. Having this data on your computer enables frequently visited pages to load faster, as the computer only needs to download the updated data of any given page. However, the downside is that corrupted files can be copied to your computer also, resulting in a variety of negative side effects for your browser. The whole process is fairly simple, and can be done by doing the following: Note: As an alternative, you can use Pareto. Disable/Uninstall Unnecessary BHOs. One behavioural pattern that tends to be common amongst many internet surfers is that we get sucked into downloading and installing programs, especially those designed to enhance our browsing experience, however many of these programs come with their own toolbars, which attach themselves to your browser. They may take up a significant portion of your browser window and typically increase the amount of time it takes for your internet browser to load up. Anyway, to reinstall Internet Explorer, do the following: Note: The easiest way of removing an application from your operating system is to use an uninstallation tool like Perfect Uninstaller.
